Hi
Was told yesterday at my appointment that once symptoms are under control that they advise not using NSAIDs alongside MTX.

When I was first diagnosed I was put on SLZ and took slow release antil inflammatories for pain relief. Two years later MTX was introduced. I use Boot's prescription service (they do all the running around, I just go to the chemist once a month to pick up meds). When I went for my first lot of MTX the computer showed up that I should not be taking MTX and ianti inflammatories together. They were very reluctant to give me my MTX, but I assured them I would check with hospital before I took it.

Phoned specialist nurse to ask, was told that technically speaking you should not take them together, but the benefit of taking them was far greater than the risk. Any problems should be picked up with the monthly blood tests. I suppose in an ideal world no pain killers at all would be the best option, but I'm afraid that most of us with RA do not live in an ideal world.

You may be one of the lucky ones and once everything is sorted and meds are working well, you may not need to take any pain killers at all. Before my liver went haywire I was doing so well, I had halved my antil inflammatories, was thinking of stopping them all together and just seeing if paracetamol would work, but it was not to be.

Take Care

Hi Paula,
Yes sorry maybe I didn't word that very well, I do realise that for a lot of people there is no choice but to take NSAIDs alongside MTX.
I was very uncertain myself as to whether (even when the RA was controlled) I needed to take NSAIDs to keep inflammation at bay, that's why I asked at my appointment yesterday and why I posted what I was told for anyone in the same situation as me.

I have just restarted on the Mtx again. I took it last year for 4 months. I've never been told to cut back on the naproxen by GP, pharmacist or consultant. They all know my drugs list. I suppose advice is given on an individual basis. I will check this out next time I see one of those 3 people to be on the safe side. I hope everyone is having the least pain possible today. Best wishes from Naomi.

Oh goodness me Mary, no need to say sorry.

I've just re read what I put and it may of come across not in the way it was intended to be read/understood. Apologies here if it did.

That's the problem sometimes with forums people miss understand the meaning of a post, read it one way when it was meant to be read another way.

I remember when I was first diagnosed and the consultant sat there writing out my prescription list. I must of had a complete look of horror on my face and I always remember him telling me that once my condition was undercontrol I wouldn't have to take the pain killers. Before RA came into my life I would of had to of had the headache from hell before I would even consider taking one paracetamol.

I hate so much having to take all of these drugs, I have what call a love/hate relationship with them.....love the fact that they help to give me some sort of normal life....hate that I have to keep taking them for the rest of my life. At first I wouldn't even take them in front of anyone, not even my husband.

Hope you understand what I meant.

Take Care

Hi Paula,
I understand you completely, I hate taking any amount of medication. Same as you before this I would only take a tablet if it was the last resort.
At my first appointment a couple of months ago the consultant told me she didn't have time for questions, so I was left a bit up the the air to be honest. I am so glad I found this site, it has helped me through a very stressful time.
All the best
Mary x
